Project Underway: Roy G Guerrero Colorado River Metropolitan Park Channel Stabilization

The Watershed Protection Department has started work on a project to slow erosion in Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Metropolitan Park. This project is between the ball fields, trail and disc golf course. You may see construction activity in this area over the next few months. We will be using limestone rock to protect the soil and help hold it in place.

We apologize for any inconvenience. We are trying to slow the erosion from moving farther upstream into the park. This will buy us time to work on a larger, permanent solution.

The erosion is along an artificial drainage channel, also known as Country Club West. The erosion has undermined the pedestrian bridge that used to be in the park. The channel is too unstable to support a new bridge at this time. The erosion also threatens the ball fields, trails and parkland. Apartments and roadways upstream could be threatened in the future if the erosion is not stopped.

While Watershed Protection Department crews are working on the current project, the department’s engineers are designing a future project that will provide a more permanent fix. This future project is called Country Club West Roy G. Guerrero Park Channel Stabilization. It will protect the channel from further erosion and allow the City of Austin to replace the failed pedestrian bridge. The channel will be restored to a more natural state. Native plants will improve wildlife habitat and park aesthetics. This future project is currently in the design phase. During the design phase, we work out the project details and draw up construction plans. We expect to complete the design phase by the end of 2018 and begin construction in 2020.

In the meantime, the current project will help prevent the erosion from progressing.
